GROUNDBREAKING HELD FOR NEW LP HOTEL
A groundbreaking ceremony was held Friday
morning for Lake Placid’s newest hotel.
The Lake Placid Courtyard by Marriott will
be built at the site of the to-be demolished Village Motel and
the former Steak and Singer Restaurant on Cascade Road.
Developed by the Gordon Companies of
Albany, the 64,000 square foot, four-story hotel will add 96
rooms to the area’s lodging stock. David Gordon, co-owner of
the company, said the combination of a brand like Marriott and
a location like Lake Placid will make it a successful project.
“It was an area we always wanted to be in,” he said. “It’s
nationally recognized and it’s a place that’s perfect for a
brand hotel.”
The Adirondack-style hotel is expected to
employ 22 to 30 people, mostly full-time positions. It will be
run by Ocean Hospitalities of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, which
manages over 120 hotels across the country. Among some of the
property’s amenities will be a lounge with fireplace, meeting
room, high-speed Internet access, heated pool, a restaurant,
two Jacuzzis and possibly a spa.
A number of elected officials and community
leaders were on hand for the groundbreaking ceremony. North
Elba Supervisor Shirley Seney said the project is a sign of
the continued growth of the community. “In order for us to
keep up the great image we have, we have to grow with it,” she
said. “For that, knowing this is going to be another wonderful
addition to our community, we thank all of you for your
interest in our town.” Lake Placid Mayor Jamie Rogers
described the new hotel as a “very exciting” project. He was
asked about the recent development trend in Lake Placid to
tear down old motels and other structures to build new hotels
and other lodging properties. “Change to many people is very
unsettling,” he said. “The reality is that’s the economics of
our market and our area, and as long as our projects are
moving forward in a quality fashion I think that’s a good
thing for the community.”
The Gordon Company is a family run real
estate development firm with an interest in hotel and
condominium projects. Company officials said they hope to open
the new Lake Placid hotel by early fall of next year. Friday’s
groundbreaking came just days after local officials announced
that the Adirondack Museum will be opening a branch museum in
Lake Placid.
